Anna Maria Island Real Estate

Anna Maria, a barrier island located about an hour south of Tampa, is comprised of three small cities, Anna Maria on the north end, Holmes Beach and Bradenton Beach to the south. The island is surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico, Tampa bay, Palma Sola Bay and is just north of Longboat Key.

The history of the island is said to have begun in 1530 when Spanish explorers claimed the area. Until 1920 the only way to the island was by boat. There are now two causeways that connect Anna Maria Island to the mainland. The northern most causeway on Manatee Road and Cortez Road to the south.

White sandy beaches, crystal clear waters, fishing, bird watching, boating and water sports make Anna Maria Island an ideal home for those in search of Florida's casual pleasures.

Condominiums and single family homes are dotted along the beaches as well as the bay front. Many homes can be found for purchase or investment along the bay and canals that are suitable for boat dockage.

The "Old Florida" flavor that has been a part of this Island's heritage since the first settlers moved in is preserved by the island's three cities.  Strict zoning laws address the size and type of buildings, and the use of the land. City governments protect the Island ambiance, high-rises are prohibited.

The northern city of Anna Maria is primarily single family houses with a few businesses along the main streets. Two historic piers extend gulfward from Anna Maria's most northern point.

Centrally located, the city of Holmes Beach has the largest population of the three cities. It maintains a small-town character while hosting residential areas, established shopping centers, small businesses, motels and condominiums.

Lying southward, Bradenton Beach has a larger ratio of resorts to single family homes. This is true, in part, to the fact that the Island is narrower in Bradenton Beach, and resorts line both sides of the main street to take advantage of the Gulf, to the west, or the bay on the eastern side of the Island.
